President-elect Donald Trump is advocating on behalf of his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, the former Republican National Committee co-chair who has been floated as a candidate to replace Florida Sen. Marco Rubio when he becomes secretary of state, according to a new report. The president-elect recently spoke with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis about his daughter-in-law, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the conversation. The nomination is ultimately up to DeSantis, Trump’s former adversary in the Republican primary. Lara, the wife of Eric Trump, resigned from her role at the RNC on Sunday night—a job she only started in March. Lara has repeatedly said she would accept the nomination in the month since her father-in-law’s electoral victory. She previously explored the possibility of a Senate run in her home state of North Carolina back in 2022, multiple outlets reported at the time. Earlier on Monday, Lara again told the Associated Press that the Senate seat was “something I would seriously consider” should DeSantis tap her to finish the final two years of Rubio’s term.
