Trump Mocked After Melania’s Bold Hat Blocks His Kiss

Social media took aim at the now-president after he shared a passionate air kiss with his wife.

Melania Trump’s boldly broad-rimmed hat appeared to keep Donald Trump at bay when he went in for a celebratory Inauguration Day kiss on his wife’s cheek. After the brand new president fell just short of sealing the deal, social media users wasted no time in poking fun at the air kiss that resulted. “Yea that looked awkward as hell,” wrote X user @jwats716 under a clip of the flubbed smooch, “she looked like she didn’t really want to have him kiss her.” User @ColbyHawker posted a gif of basketball superstar LeBron James blocking a shot and wrote, “It was blocked. Good [defense] by the hat I guess.” Melania’s remarkably-wide hat—which obscured the upper portion of her face—had dominated fashion discourse around Inauguration Day. Some of the reaction was teasing. The look drew comparisons to outfits worn by Michael Jackson, McDonald’s the Hamburglar, and a secret agent from the comic strip Spy vs. Spy. Trump’s Inauguration has been otherwise a success for the now-president, who was officially sworn in to the nation’s highest office around noon in D.C.
