J.Law chopped it off, Kim Kardashian went blonde, and Michelle Obama got—and lost—bangs. 2013 was a roller-coaster ride of hairdos, and we saw it all. The good: lots of fringe; the bad: short hair gone wrong; and the ugly: the revival of the double buns. In celebration of the stars’ lustrous locks, a look back at some of 2013’s biggest celebrity hair moments.

In January, Vogue dubbed it “The Chop.” Others referred to it simply as “The Karlie.” Whatever it was, supermodel Karlie Kloss let the scissors do the talking when she cut nearly 7 inches off of her long brown hair, leaving her with a soft, wavy bob and Birkin-esque bangs.

Sure, this pixie may not have been on purpose, but everyone’s dream BFF, Jennifer Lawrence, embraced her chopped cut and jumped on the short-hair bandwagon, joining other celebs who got cropped this year.

Kimmy, Kimmy. The reality star said goodbye to her dark brown hair in 2013, opting for a honey-blond look. But we’re still wondering: Was the color Kanye’s idea?

Sienna Miller! With rose gold hair! The actress debuted her pinkish-gold hue the British Fashion Awards and left everyone speechless.

Was Kate going gray? Who knows! But the Duchess of Cambridge—who always has highly covetable hair—debuted an even more swoon-worthy ’do in November, cutting a few inches and going a bit darker. $984 well spent, Middleton.

Over the summer, the first lady showed off a slight ombre look, with honey-colored highlights and side-swept bangs. While the look didn’t spark as big a media storm as her bangs debut did in January, Obama still managed to pull it off.

Whether it was for a movie or not, Carey Mulligan’s brunette switch was everything.

On stage, at a basketball game, or in the streets, Beyoncé’s hair took 2013 by storm. There was the brief pixie freak-out, a cool blond bob, and Queen B’s usual long, luscious locks.

One thing is for sure, Kerry Washington looks good, regardless of her hairstyle. 2013 was a major year for Kerry—and her hair, which came in an array of bangs, both full-frontal and side-swept, soft buns, short and long lengths, and straight or curly. Clearly Olivia Pope can handle anything.

In November, Ke$ha tamed her wild side when she revealed a sleek, light blue and pink hairstyle at the American Music Awards. Could cotton candy be the color of 2014?
