Jack Smith Resigns from Department of Justice

Smith’s departure was noted in a new court filing submitted by the DOJ on Saturday.

Special counsel Jack Smith has resigned from the Justice Department, per Politico. Smith resigned on Friday after he completed his work on two criminal investigations into President-elect Donald Trump. The note of his departure was mentioned in a court filing that Justice Department officials submitted on Saturday afternoon to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon. In the filing, officials urged Judge Cannon to not extend a court order she issued last week blocking the release of Smith’s final report on his Trump investigation findings. The Justice Department is hoping to release Smith’s report before Trump’s inauguration, the Associated Press adds. The department’s officials have argued that Judge Cannon does not have the power to prevent Attorney General Merrick Garland from releasing Smith’s report.
