Martha Stewart almost hosted Saturday Night Live right after her five-month stint in federal prison, she revealed on the Tonight Show, but a surprising snafu kept her from the gig.
During her sit-down with Jimmy Fallon Monday night, Stewart said that of the nine performers who have impersonated her on SNL, David Spade was her “favorite,” adding, “Imitation is the highest form of flattery.”
The 83-year-old Stewart also said that she has always wanted to host the show—and it came closer to happening than was previously known.
“I wanted to and they asked me as I was coming out of Alderson, that camp that I was in for awhile,” she said jokingly of her prison sentence that resulted from her insider trading scandal. “My parole officer wouldn’t give me the time to do it.”
“I was allowed to be out of my house eight hours a day,” she continued, but “that b----rd” said no. “I’m so p---ed,” she said, that she didn’t get to do the show after receiving the call from SNL boss Lorne Michaels. “Maybe someday.”
Stewart said she’s not the only one who missed out, because she “would be amazing” as a host and urged fans to “start a campaign” to get her on the show.
