Duke University Is Not Happy With ‘The White Lotus’
The prestigious school was disturbed by how its official merchandise was used on a recent episode of the show.

Duke University has taken serious issue with the way its official merchandise is being used in the new season of The White Lotus. And for those likely wondering, no, it has nothing to do with that scene.
In a statement shared by Vulture, the university’s vice president for communications Frank Tramble explained: “The White Lotus not only uses our brand without permission, but in our view uses it on imagery that is troubling, does not reflect our values or who we are, and simply goes too far.”
Tramble was referring to Jason Isaacs’ character on the show, Timothy Ratliff, who dons a Duke shirt while experiencing a suicidal episode during The White Lotus’ recent March 23 episode, “Denials.”

“Suicide is the second-leading cause of death on college campuses. As imagery from the show is being shared widely across social media, we are using our brand to promote mental health awareness and remind people that help is available,” Tramble continued. “Duke appreciates artistic expression and creative storytelling, but characters prominently wearing apparel bearing Duke’s federally registered trademarks creates confusion and mistakenly suggests an endorsement or affiliation where none exists.”
As reported by The New York Times, Tramble declined to comment on whether or not the university would consider legal action.
The Daily Beast has contacted HBO for comment.

On the show, Isaacs’ character learns he’s wanted for white-collar crimes while on vacation with his family in Thailand. As part of the emotional fallout, he imagines partaking in a murder-suicide that includes his wife, Victoria, who is played by Parker Posey.
