Medicaid Website Goes Down After Trump Orders Spending Freeze

The Medicaid website portal went dark after President Donald Trump ordered a temporary freeze on federal aid and grants Tuesday. State Medicaid programs use the online system to receive federal funding. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tweeted that the administration is aware of the shutdown. “We have confirmed no payments have been affected—they are still being processed and sent. We expect the portal will be back online shortly,” she wrote. Leavitt previously said that Trump’s federal funding freeze would not apply to Medicaid. “This is not a blanket pause on federal assistance in grant programs from the Trump administration. Individual assistance that includes—I’m not naming everything that’s included but just to give you a few examples—Social Security benefits, Medicaid benefits, food stamps, welfare benefits, assistance that is going directly to individuals will not be impacted by this pause,” she said during Tuesday’s press conference. About a fifth of all Americans receive health insurance through Medicaid.
