Luigi Mangione’s Mother Reported Him Missing Last Month: Report

The murder suspect hadn’t been in touch with family members following a back surgery months ago.

The mother of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, reported him missing on Nov. 18, the New York Post reported Monday, citing sources in law enforcement. Mangione, 26, had not been in touch with family members after he had a back surgery months ago. His last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii, police have said. A roommate of his there, R.J. Martin, told CNN that Mangione had mentioned having back problems. “When I first interviewed him, before he moved in, I remember he said he had a back issue, and he was hoping to get stronger in Hawaii,” he said, adding that even surfing caused extreme pain. Martin said that after the surgery, Mangione showed him an X-ray of screws that had been implanted in his spine. The banner image of Mangione’s X account includes the same—or a similar—image. At the time of his capture, Mangione was in possession of writings critical of the health-care industry, according to authorities. At the scene of the killing, bullet casings were found reading “deny,” “defend,” and “depose”—a potential allusion to a book on controversial insurer tactics.
