How Melania Has Abdicated Her First Lady Duties

Melania Trump has stopped trying to appear like a typical first lady, says the president’s longtime biographer.

Melania Trump has dropped all pretense of fulfilling the traditional duties of a first lady, the president’s longtime biographer has alleged.

Author Michael Wolff said Melania’s long-awaited appearance at the White House on Thursday, which marked her first public outing in more than a month, proves that she has “abdicated” the role of first lady.

Melania, 56, re-emerged to join President Donald Trump, 80, in the White House Rose Garden for an event celebrating the expansion of her Fostering the Future Initiative.

“I heard you missed me. Here I am,” she said with a smile. “Here I am! Welcome to the White House.”

Wolff mused that Melania’s remark hid something more sinister.

“I would just like to say that there is a fine line between a tease and a taunt,” he told Inside Trump’s Head co-host, Joanna Coles. “And I think she has gone over it and that this is actually a taunt. ‘You know I’m not here, I know I’m not here, everybody knows I’m not here, but f--- you.’”

Coles asked, “And is that to the president or is that to us?”

“I think it is to everybody and also to the president,” Wolff answered. “She comes and goes as she pleases. She’s unregulated. She is defying, or maybe the better word is, she’s abdicating the official first lady role, which is to be a model of domestic propriety and to do good works. So she’s clearly not the model of domestic propriety, to say the very least.”

Fostering the Future, an initiative Melania launched in 2021, provides foster children with scholarships to colleges and universities across the country. On Thursday, Melania announced that the initiative was expanding its national network thanks to a $2 million donation from Fox Corporation and IndyCar, owned by racing billionaire Roger Penske.

But Wolff said even the expansion of Melania’s scholarship program appeared to serve a personal interest.

“Theoretically, she was in Washington to make an announcement about good works she was supporting, but it’s a weird kind of corporate interaction, a sponsorship,” he said. “Really, what this was is a promotional event for Penske, for a corporate interest, the Penske family corporate interests.”

Wolff continued, “So what she has interposed herself in—and she has been out there actually cultivating sponsors for herself, for her own business. So really her official job, the official part of being a first lady to do good works, she has converted into private enterprise for herself. That’s what she spends most of her time on: monetizing this theoretical—and highly theoretical role—that she has as the first lady and the wife of Donald Trump.”

Melania’s Shockingly Light Workload Is Exposed in Audit

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Melania’s curiously light workload this summer was laid bare in a damning audit by the Daily Beast. An analysis of the first lady’s diary found that she has been publicly spotted on only 38 days as of July 31. Two of those scant appearances, including one radio interview, promoted her eponymous documentary.

But astonishingly, Melania’s 2026 record thus far already outpaces her performance in 2025, when she appeared in public 47 times after Trump’s inauguration.

A Daily Beast review found that in the equivalent period, from January 2009 to August 2010, Michelle Obama made 130 speeches. Jill Biden, who also worked as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College during her time as first lady, gave 43 speeches in the same 18-month period upon moving into the White House.

The numbers show that Melania’s workload was only 22 percent of Michelle’s and two-thirds of Jill’s, who was also working another job.

“Among all of the things that we have never seen in a White House, this is another,” Wolff said. “The first lady here is a corporate shill, and the first lady is someone who is not the first lady. I mean, at least who is not the first lady who occupies the White House.”
