Democrat Sharice Davids Becomes First Native American Woman Elected to Congress

New Mexico’s Deb Haaland is also on track to pull off a major victory for Native American women.

Democrat Sharice Davids went down in history on Tuesday night as the first Native American woman elected to Congress, with New Mexico’s Deb Haaland expected to pull off a similar victory. Davids, a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, became the first LGBT person to represent Kansas after defeating four-term incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yodert, who was endorsed by President Trump. The 38-year-old activist, lawyer, and former women’s MMA fighter had 53 percent of the vote to Yodert’s 45 with 484 of 628 precincts reporting. Haaland, a Democrat and a member of Pueblo of Laguna, was also on track to give Native American women a win in New Mexico, where she had a major lead late Tuesday against Republican Janice Arnold-Jones for the state’s 1st congressional district.
