ELEPHANTS IN THE ROOM

Moderate Republicans Face Dozen Primaries

Election day is in full swing, but with moderate Republican Dede Scozzafava's withdrawal from Tuesday’s special congressional election energizing the conservative wing of the Republican Party, GOP strategists are already facing the possibility that the party's right wing will challenge about a dozen of their top candidates in 2010 primaries, Politico reports. Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Connecticut Representative Rob Simmons and Illinois Representative Mark Kirk—all candidates for highly contested Senate seats—are in the crosshairs for conservative activists who find their politics too liberal. In what might be the most high-profile of these battles, Crist, a moderate Republican and popular Florida governor, is being challenged for the Republican senate nomination by Marco Rubio  a favorite of the right-wing tea party movement who's received an endorsement from Jim DeMint (R-SC).

Apparently the writers of the Cheat Sheet don't read Politico, or they would know that Crist's approval numbers are falling (http://www.politico.com/blogs/scorecard/1109/Crist_s_falling_approval_rati ng.html).

Of course, they describe Scozzafava as a moderate, so it's pretty apparent how ignorant they are.

Just our of curiosity, what would be the definition of a Moderate Republican? No jokes, please. What do those of you who are Republicans consider to be the beliefs of a Moderate Republican?

I wonder if Obama's pro-war policies will bring out any principled leftist democrats to challenge pro-war democratic Congressmen and Senators or perhaps even Obama himself. Eugene McCarthy where are you?

Hey dchooknurse ..... Your question, in and of itself, appears harmless....however, in this format I chose to believe it suspect.... To satisfy your curiosity, I suggest you ask the Far Left what they have against the Blue Dogs. By the way, I do hope Maxine Waters is the 1st person you seek out for that satisfaction.

Whatever one might wonder about many things, one can be certain that Plantkin has no principles. Now Obama, who Plantkin has criticized variously for months for "dithering" or considering "cutting and running" or having the blood of American men on his hands, is simply "pro-war.

And Plantkin claims to be wondering about "principled leftists" opposing him. Again no need to wonder: one can be certain that a central feature of this genre of Plantkin post is its absolute insincerity, and complete bad faith.

DC you're never going to get an answer from these loons, it's pointless to attempt any calm discourse as they are incapable of such.

So you're saying the Republicans are a far right fringe party and America doesn't have a true left wing party?

Everyone knows why the conservatives are against Crist, and arranging a date with a model or a quickie marriage won't help him.

In general, they are against any Republican who is pro-choice, pro-gay rights, or would even think about voting for any of the reforms Obama wants. Outside the South, a party that far to the Right is not going to have any future, but evidently they only care about their Confederate-evangelical base and the voters they already have in the bag.

Gay rights are being able to have the same rights as everybody else in this country, but you already knew that. I guess you just needed to bait everyone with your stupid question, so you could get a little attention.

The monster has awakened and it must be fed. It will devour the moderates and when they are gone will turn and feed upon itself.
The Democrats and independents will coalesce and the country will move forward.

I'm predicting that the Democratic majority in the Senate will grow over the next 4 years to the point where we won't have to have blue dog votes to crush a filibuster.

The Democratic majority in the House looks to decrease in 2010, but not enough to lose control. And in 2012, I'm betting on some significant gains in the House.

All of this caused by the conservative refusal to support moderate Republicans...

You're right, we probably won't "still" be voting in "1012". Now everything is clear. You are living in the year 1009.

The Dark Ages.

Did any of you see Tim Pawlenty on Morning Joe today? He would NOT answer the question as to whether there was room in his Republican Party for Olympia Snowe. He danced around it and said that they could disagree on a couple points, but anything outside that was not a possibility. Unbelievable.

byers, what's even more unbelievable is the number of seemingly sane pundits who still insist on calling Pawlenty a "moderate".

cvillekid: Pawlenty might have been moderate originally, but no Republican politician can afford to be moderate any more. We saw the same thing with John McCain, who abandoned all of his principles from 2000 to get the presidential nomination in 2008.

Besides, compared to Bachmann and Palin, he is relatively moderate. This will no doubt change as we get closer to the 2012 primaries.

I hope Blue dogs, Republicans, reformed moderates, conservatives liberals and all leaders get together and fix our country. Help our economy, get the mojo back here. But the party that I support better start to focus, and present healthcare, correctly to people so they can understand it.You cannot ram things down our throats, democrats nor republicans, there is such confusion. It is because the administration thought we dont need to understand, there are many people not happy with the lack of focus on the economy, continuation of war and spending billions, abroad, and the lack of explaination to the masses. I am stunned to see people turning away saying they dont like either party. Are we going to get the healthcare the congress and govt has?

Crying, Mal? We're cheering. Your conservative extremist candidates will have a hard time getting elected in 2010 and 2012. But please, don't let me stop you guys from trying.

Personally, I'm encouraging you to run Sarah Palin for President in 2012. It will ensure Obama's reelection.
