![]() Edward Burtynsky: Oil has already left the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, but try to catch it somewhere on tour or at least check out some of the photos online. Strikingly beautiful for a not-so-beautiful subject. Thought-provoking, alternative perspective on contemporary climate-change discussion. |

![]() You should watch former Secretary of State George Shultz’s talk at the Carnegie Endowment, given this week. It offered a counterintuitive view on what to do in Afghanistan with interesting anecdotes from the '80s that illustrate Iran's longstanding proclivity for duplicity and show how hard it will be to negotiate. Shultz lambasted Washington for running up irresponsible debt. It was quite a bipartisan love fest there, packed with many administration officials as well as columnists. |

![]() For anyone who wants to be up to date on events in Iraq as VP Joe Biden meets with its president and prime minister, I recommend Kenneth M. Pollack’s “The Battle for Baghdad” in The National Interest magazine. Pollack, recently back from Baghdad, shares insights on the current political in-fighting in Iraq and the way President Barack Obama may be losing influence there. He highlights how a potential January referendum on a U.S.-Iraqi security agreement could prove troublesome. |
