Whoa! Anyone who missed Eric Lichtblau and Eric Lipton’s story on the continuing fallout from Senator John Ensign’s affair with a member of his campaign staff should go online and take another at Friday’s New York Times. If you thought this scandal had all blown over—just a “personal matter,” as the senator insisted—the reporters chronicle a series of special favors done for the husband of the senator’s lover that roped in (and corrupted) still more members of the Senate and their staffs, along with Ensign’s political supporters (perhaps now former supporters). Who says long-form journalism is dead? This is old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting at its best. Revelations about the bagman role of self-righteous Sen. Tom Coburn are particularly priceless.

Ensign and Coburn and their "C Street" connections are odious to everything American democracy is supposed to be about.
This is the story of Ensign, a philandering fraud, who appointed his married paramour's husband to a job that he was not legally qualified, knowingly violating the one year restriction of the law.
Then the pompous and sanctimonious, Coburn, negotiates a "hush money" payoff with the woman's family for the grief and damage he has caused, and denies he did this until just recently, when faced with a possible grand jury indictment for perjury.
Both should resign from the Senate forthwith, but knowing Republican arrogance and capacity for denial, I'm sure we'll be stuck with both these criminals for a while, just as S.C. is stuck with Gov. Sanford, another Republican abuser of the public trust and the taxpayers money to fund his extra-marital affairs.

What is really disgusting is that all of these pitiful reps and senators and governors were so critical of the Lewinsky affair.
It was very poor taste and bad judgement on Clinton's part. But it is worse to be having illegitimate children and affairs with your best friends' wives and others and be so hypocritical and judgemental as these current "gentlemen" were when voting for impeachment or just plain bad mouthing Clinton.
