The peak reading of my summer has been Endpoint from John Updike's last poems, a clear-eyed chronicle of the final days of his life. This direct confrontation with death, through the magic of fine writing, leaves a reader not grief-struck or sad, much less depressed, but enlivened, ennobled, even exhilarated. We miss the man very much, but John Updike's writing is with us still. |
